Renato Balestra Armchair for Cinova, Italy, 1973

An iconic Italian lounge chair designed by Renato Balestra for Cinova in 1973, embodying the bold, sculptural character of 1970s Italian design.

The chair features a dramatic curved chrome-plated steel frame, forming a continuous sweeping profile from the floor through the seat and high back. Deeply padded, button-tufted upholstery follows the curvature of the frame, with generous cylindrical cushioning across the front creating its distinctive enveloping silhouette.

This example retains its original brown suede upholstery, which shows considerable age-related wear, fading and areas of deterioration consistent with its vintage condition. The photographs also show the original internal construction and Cinova-branded fastening detail. The chrome frame displays expected surface wear and patination.

A highly architectural statement chair with a low, relaxed profile, combining polished tubular steel with soft, generously proportioned upholstery—a characteristic expression of progressive Italian furniture design of the early 1970s.
