Mid-Century Murano Glass Pendant by Mazzega
Italy, c. 1960s–70s
A sculptural and highly textural Murano glass pendant attributed to Mazzega, embodying the expressive material language of late Italian mid-century design.
The fixture is composed of two substantial hand-formed glass elements. The lower section presents as a thick, square block with deeply modelled, almost liquid surface movement — an organic, swirling relief typical of Mazzega’s experimental approach to molten glass during the 1960s. Above, a cylindrical glass diffuser rises through a darkened metal collar, creating a layered architectural composition.
The contrast between the heavily textured clear glass and the linear, understated metal frame gives the piece a refined Brutalist sensibility. When illuminated, the glass refracts light through its irregular surface, producing a soft, sculptural glow with remarkable depth and shadow play.
Suspended from a dark patinated rod and canopy, the pendant maintains a strong vertical proportion, making it ideal for hallways, stairwells, or positioned over a side table or kitchen island where its materiality can be appreciated at close range.
