Mid-Century Italian “Poliedri” Chandelier by Carlo Scarpa for Venini, c. 1960s
An iconic Murano glass chandelier composed of individually hand-blown poliedri elements, attributed to Carlo Scarpa for Venini. The fixture is formed from a dense arrangement of faceted polyhedral glass pieces, each suspended on a structured metal frame to create a sculptural, architectural volume.
Notably, this example features larger-scale poliedri “bottles”, a less common and highly desirable variation. The increased size of each element enhances both the visual presence and the way light is refracted, giving the chandelier a more substantial, jewel-like luminosity compared to standard configurations.
Executed in a combination of Cristallo (clear) and amber glass, the tonal variation introduces warmth and depth, amplifying the interplay of light across the sharply faceted surfaces. Each element displays subtle irregularities inherent to hand-blown Murano glass, producing a soft, prismatic diffusion when illuminated.
The chandelier presents as a multi-tiered form, with repeating geometric units creating a rhythmic, honeycomb-like structure—one of Scarpa’s most recognisable and enduring designs.
Mounted on an internal metal frame, the piece retains its original character, with patina consistent with age. The glass remains in good vintage condition, showing minor wear commensurate with its period.
The chandelier is rewired to Australian Standards.
