Elfo Table Lamp by Denis Santachiara for Foscarini, Italy, 1999

Sculptural Elfo table lamp, designed by Denis Santachiara for Foscarini in 1999.

A distinctive example of late-20th-century Italian lighting design, Elfo combines a softly illuminated, curvaceous body with an exceptionally thin circular metal top. At its centre, an integrated directional spotlight creates a second, more focused source of light, contrasting with the warm ambient glow emitted through the body of the lamp.

The design is characteristically minimal yet playful, with Santachiara transforming a functional table lamp into a small architectural object. Its asymmetrical profile changes depending on the viewing angle, while the broad disc appears to float almost weightlessly above the luminous base.

The juxtaposition of diffused and directional light gives Elfo both a practical and sculptural quality, making it equally effective as a bedside, side-table or accent lamp.
