Early Italian Flush Mount Chandelier by Barovier & Toso, c.1970s
An early and highly sculptural Murano glass flush mount attributed to Barovier & Toso, representing a formative expression of the maker’s iconic leaf-form lighting.
Composed of deeply textured glass elements arranged in a radial formation, each piece is worked with a rich, granular surface—reminiscent of graniglia—allowing the light to softly diffuse and refract throughout the composition. The layered veining and organic relief of each leaf reflects Barovier’s distinctive approach to naturalistic form during this period.
At the centre, a hand-blown ribbed glass diffuser anchors the piece, concealing the light source while emitting a warm, even glow. The fixture is supported internally by a gilt metal frame, consistent with Italian production of the era.
As an early example, the piece carries a notable sense of weight and depth in both glass and construction—qualities that distinguish it from later, lighter iterations of similar designs.
The overall effect is architectural yet restrained, functioning as both a ceiling-mounted chandelier and a sculptural focal point.
We also currently have a smaller flush mount in a closely related design, offering a cohesive opportunity for layered placement within a project.
