Rostrato is one of Murano’s most technically demanding and historically significant glassmaking techniques. Developed in the early 1930s by Ercole Barovier, the process marked a pivotal moment in Venetian glass history — moving beyond traditional decorative finishes toward bold sculptural surface experimentation. The term derives from rostrata, meaning “beaked,” referencing the sharp, crystalline protrusions that define the technique.

At eModerno, our Rostrato pieces are handcrafted in our Venetian furnace using this same traditional hot-glass methodology. While the glass remains molten, the master glassblower manually draws and pulls the surface outward to form individual spikes or pyramidal “beaks.” Each projection must be shaped in real time, requiring precision, strength, and an intuitive understanding of temperature and timing. There is no moulding involved and no mechanical replication — the form is built entirely by hand.
The result is a richly sculptural vessel with a dynamic, light-refracting surface. The faceted protrusions capture and scatter light, creating depth, brilliance, and movement from every angle. Subtle variations in proportion, rhythm, and density occur naturally through the handmade process, ensuring each piece is entirely one-of-a-kind.

Our contemporary Rostrato works honour the innovation of Murano’s modernist era while continuing the lineage of artisanal craftsmanship that defines Venetian glassmaking today.
