A refined and sculptural example of mid-century Italian lighting, this flush mount chandelier by Barovier & Toso, circa 1970s, embodies the brand’s mastery of textured Murano glass and organic form.
The composition is built from a series of deeply moulded, shell-like glass elements arranged in a radial formation, each piece richly worked with intricate relief detailing. Notably, the glass incorporates graniglia (crushed glass)—a technique where fragments are fused into the surface during production—creating a softly diffused, crystalline texture that catches and refracts light with exceptional depth. This results in a warm, ambient glow while maintaining a strong sculptural presence.
At the centre, a ribbed glass diffuser anchors the composition, finished with a subtle finial, reinforcing the balance between decorative and architectural design.
This model sits within an important period for Barovier & Toso, where traditional Murano craftsmanship began to take on more expressive, sculptural forms—bridging classic Venetian glassmaking with the evolving modernist aesthetic of the 1970s. The result is a piece that feels both grounded in heritage and distinctly contemporary in its presence.
A particularly strong early example of this form, the depth and definition of the glass elements here are more pronounced than later iterations, giving the fixture a richer visual density.
We also currently hold a larger version in a closely related design, ideal for projects requiring greater scale or a more dramatic ceiling presence.
Vintage condition, with light wear consistent with age. Rewired and suitable for installation, wired to Australian standards.
