Mid-Century Brutalist Chandelier by Albino Poli for Poliarte
Italy, c. 1960s–70s
A striking example of Italian mid-century Brutalism, this chandelier by Albino Poli for Poliarte embodies the studio’s sculptural approach to glass and metal. The cylindrical body is composed of thick, textured glass panels set within a hand-worked metal framework, forming a rhythmic geometric pattern of vertical segments and diamond motifs.
The glass alternates between clear and rich amber tones, each panel heavily textured with organic, almost volcanic surface movement. When illuminated, the amber elements ignite with a deep golden glow, while the clear panels refract and scatter light, creating remarkable depth and visual complexity.
The surrounding metal structure — finished in a heavily worked, patinated tone — reinforces the Brutalist aesthetic. Its hammered surfaces, scalloped upper band and expressive scroll arms below give the piece a forged, architectural presence, characteristic of Poliarte’s distinctive 1960s production.
Suspended from a matching canopy, the chandelier offers both sculptural weight and luminous warmth — equally suited to contemporary interiors seeking contrast or period spaces honouring mid-century Italian design.
