This monumental Italian mid-19th century table is executed entirely in solid walnut and exemplifies the architectural gravitas and craftsmanship associated with important Venetian institutional furniture of the period.
The table is defined by its substantial scale and strongly architectural form. It rests on two boldly carved pedestal supports, each articulated with deep-volute scrolls and acanthus-inspired carving, framing recessed panelled reserves. The carving is crisp yet softened by age, indicating hand execution rather than later mechanical work, and retains excellent depth and definition.
The long rectangular top is constructed from solid walnut planks, showcasing a rich, warm patina with visible grain movement and natural variation consistent with age and use. The thickness of the top and its restrained edge profile reinforce the table’s original function as a library or refectory table, intended for daily use within a grand institutional setting rather than domestic display.
A substantial connecting stretcher runs between the pedestals, subtly carved with a central scroll motif, providing both structural integrity and visual balance. The underside reveals traditional joinery and pegged construction, further confirming period authenticity.
The surface presents honest wear throughout: softened edges, minor marks, and tonal variations commensurate with age, all of which contribute to its character and authenticity. The walnut has matured beautifully over time, developing a depth of colour impossible to replicate in later reproductions.
Sourced from a historic Venetian library and forming part of a rare group of eight tables released from the same monumental property, this example is extraordinary in both scale and provenance. Following their removal from Venice, the tables were housed with an associate in Napoli, where they were acquired as a group.
Seven further tables from this exceptional suite are available. While unified in material, period, and craftsmanship, each example shows subtle variations inherent to hand-made production.
Pieces of this calibre, provenance, and condition are exceedingly rare, particularly in multiples.
